Renovation and Expansion Project Begins at Santiago International Airport

In mid-June, work began on a construction project at Arturo Merino Benitez International Airport in Santiago to ease peak-time congestion and set the stage for coming decades of expected growth in air travel. Phase I, due for completion in early 2014, is meant to boost capacity from the current 9 million passengers per year to 15 million. This phase will include the renovation of existing buildings and facilities, a new baggage handling system, seven new counters for domestic flights, a new five-gate remote international boarding area, and additional passport control counters for international fliers. Future-phase construction plans include a new terminal building, with the goal of bringing airport capacity to 29 million passengers per year by 2030.
