This hike, which leads from the altiplano village of Machuca down to the Rio Grande, passes through a number of different plant zones, offering great variety of impressions. Abandoned farming terraces and irrigation channels are testament to ancient cultures in this lonely region: proof that life was once sustained in the desert. During the course of the hike, you will see canyons up to 300m/984ft deep, as well as giant cacti and plenty of alpacas that also inhabit this region. Your bus transport will be waiting for you when you arrive at the oasis of Rio Grande. During the journey home, a fascinating detour is made to the rock paintings of Yerbas Buenas, created by the Atacameños, long ago.
Good trekking boots are recommended for this excursion.
Tthis hike lasts around 5hrs and is almost completely downhill.
